The IW Table Tennis Association’s Finals Night provided an evening of high quality and exciting table tennis with some of the Island’s top players performing, and players from across all divisions represented.
Match of the night was the Men’s Doubles Championship Final which saw Lee Orton and Ricky Lock take on Don Hobbs and Tim Giles. Orton and Lock narrowly won the first two sets with some great athletic play, but Hobbs and Giles came back and showed their skill in easily winning the next two. In the final set Orton and Lock played superbly to win the match.
Another exciting match was between Heather Wykes and Garry Thorp, who competed in the Supervets Handicap Final, open to those over 60. With Thorp narrowly taking the first two sets 12-10 and 11-9, Wykes came back to take the next two by the same scoreline. With everything on the final set, Wykes put in a tremendous effort to take the last set in fine style.
Mike Prior took the Over 70s Championship Final against Dave Rendle, winning 3-1 in a match full of skill which belied the ages of the contestants.
Don and Temeesha Hobbs played together again in the Mixed Doubles Championship final against Lee Orton and Anna Joyce, which proved to be a hotly contested final with some great attacking play and exciting rallies. The Hobbs pair won in four sets.
The Ladies’ Singles Championship Final was between Temeesha Hobbs and Anna Joyce. The 3-0 victory for Hobbs belied the closeness of all the sets, with the winning margins only two points in every set.
The Men’s Singles Championship Final was contested between Alex Rorke and Don Hobbs – who had already met previously in the evening in the Veterans Championship Final, with Rorke the winner. Hobbs, who had already played in five matches during the evening, could not get the better of Rorke, whose defensive play was quite superb, and Rorke took the match in three sets.
The Handicap Doubles was won by Tim Giles and Martin Johnstone, who overcame father and daughter pair Don and Temeesha Hobbs in four sets.
