Protest over felling of 120-year-old oak
Plans to fell a 120-year-old oak on Carter’s Road on the outskirts of Ryde brought around 50 local residents and environmental campaigners out to protest. Residents believe Island Roads demanded the oak be removed to allow buses along the road in case of diversion.Alison Bulpitt, whose garden is overlooked by the tree, claimed the oak was of sentimental importance to her, as it formed part of a memorial to her son, Hoku, who died six years ago. She has named the oak ‘the Hoku tree’. The landowner, Miles Clarke, said: “We need a change of priority. I was given three working days to take down the 120-year-old oak and threatened with legal action and costs.” Another local resident, Len Gaskin, said: “It’s not a free country. Someone is telling me it’s going to be cut down behind my back.It should be paid for by central government if they want a relief road around Ryde.” However, a local Ryde Town Councillor, Karen Lucioni, has disputed that the oak is actually to be cut down. Cllr. Lucioni said: “This tree has a tree protection order on it. When I saw the landowners video asking for help it of course it caught my […]
Why we love the Isle of Wight
Let’s face it, we all love the Island for some reason or another this is why we all choose to live here. However, the Island holds some secrets and oddities and has been home to some dubious characters over the years. Going back to 1635 the famous scientist, philosopher, inventor and astronomer Robert Hooke was born in Freshwater, there is now a road that bears his name, Hooke Hill. One of Hookes achievements was he coined the term ‘cell’ to describe the basic unit of life. A permanent exhibition can be viewed at the Isle of Wight Planetarium at Fort Victoria. Like all places, the Isle of Wight has also had its fair share of famous celebrities take up residence over the years including Anthony Minghella (Film Director), Mark King (Level 42), Jeremy Irons, Bear Grylls the adventurer, Uffa Fox, and Sheila Hancock. Sir Winston Churchill, Charles Dickens, Charles Darwin, John Keats, Karl Marx, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Julia Margaret Cameron and of course Queen Victoria spent many happy times on the Isle of Wight. Because of the Island’s location it has always been a prime location for prisons. Up until recently the Island held category A prisoners, however over the […]
Two forward-thinking Isle of Wight GP practices have joined forces to improve patient services, including the launch of a new minor illness service to help meet demand for more same-day appointments. This week Carisbrooke Health Centre and The Dower House Surgery in Newport have also commissioned a musculo-skeletal service (MSK) and are piloting a prescription ordering service. Dr Myrto Kaklamanou, from Carisbrooke Health Centre, said: “We strongly believe that all three of these initiatives will be warmly welcomed by patients as they will not only improve our services to them but it will also make more appointments available for our GPs to see more patients with chronic and long term conditions. It’s a win/win scenario.” Dr Timothy Whelan, from The Dower House Surgery, said: “Demand for primary care services is increasing all the time and our two practices are now sharing resources to meet that demand on behalf of our registered patients who are at the heart of our planning. “This is a very exciting time for us as we develop responsive services for our patients at the heart of our community.” Minor Illness Service In response to patient demands for more on-the-day appointments for minor illnesses, the two practices […]
